  543. This digitally compiled map includes geology, oil and gas field
  544. centerpoints, geologic provinces, and major faults of Iran with some of
  545. these components extended into geographically adjacent areas. This digital
  546. compilation is an interim product of the U.S. Geological Survey's World
  547. Energy Project (WEP) and part of a series on CD-ROM. The goal of the WEP is
  548. to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources
  549. of the world and report the result of this assessment in the year 2000. For
  550. data management purposes, the world was divided into eight energy regions
  551. corresponding approximately to the economic regions of the world as defined
  552. by the U.S. Department of State.
  553.  
  554. Each world energy region was then further divided into geologic provinces
  555. on the basis of natural geologic entities and may include a dominant
  556. geologic structural element or a number of contiguous elements. Some
  557. provinces contain multiple, genetically related basins.
  558.  
  559. Geologic province boundaries for Iran were delineated using data from
  560. different geologic maps, publications, and other tectonic and geographic
  561. data. Each province was assigned a unique number; the first digit is the
  562. region number. An attempt was made to number the provinces in geographical
  563. order or groups (see Pollastro and others, 1998).  The list of provinces 
  564. sorted by number is shown to the right of the map.
  565.  
  566. Centerpoints of oil and gas fields are shown and were plotted with
  567. permission from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation, 1996
  568. worldwide oil and gas field database.
  569.  
  570. Allocation of field data to geologic provinces provided a ranking of the
  571. provinces by total known petroleum volume (see Klett and others, 1997). The
  572. WEP further characterizes the geologic provinces by petroleum system and
  573. assessment units in order to assess the undiscovered petroleum volume.
  574.  
  575. Specific details of map and data sources, and the procedure used in the
  576. compilation of this geologic map of Iran are given in the metadata files
  577. and described briefly in the text below.
  578.  
  579. Stratigraphic subdivisions of Phanerozoic rocks were combined to simplify
  580. the geology and maintain consistency with other maps in this series.
  581. Precambrian rocks are undivided.
  582.  
  583. This map was compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.
  584. (ESRI) ARC/INFO software. Political boundaries and cartographic
  585. representations are used, with permission, from ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M
  586. digital coverages, have no political significance, and are displayed for
  587. general reference only.

  606. DATA PROCESSING STEPS
  607.  
  608.  This map has been digitally compiled and abstracted from The
  609.  Geological Map of Iran, (1985) Compiled by A. Haghipour and A.
  610.  Aghanabati, Ministry of Mines and Metals, Geological Survey of
  611.  Iran, Scale 1:2,500,000.
  612.  
  613.  The projection information written on the original map is "..
  614.  adjusted from Polyconic Projection of International 1:1000000 Map
  615.  of the Earth". Because such projection is not directly supported by
  616.  ESRI's ARC/INFO software, it was necessary to georeference the map
  617.  to the one of known projections. This was done as follows:
  618.  
  619.  1. The latitude/longitude grid with cell size 2 * 2 degrees was
  620.  projected to Lambert Conformal Conic projection and then used to
  621.  create ARC/INFO point coverage. That point coverage was used to
  622.  create "to - from" links by ARC/INFO CONTROLPOINTS program.
  623.  
  624.  2. A gray scale scanned image of the original paper map was
  625.  transformed to Lambert Conformal Conic projection by ARC/INFO
  626.  GRIDWARP program (polynomial of the second order) using the "to -
  627.  from" links created by CONTROLPOINTS program.
  628.  
  629.  3. Geologic polygon boundaries from source map were initially
  630.  transferred to mylar and then scanned to produce binary image.
  631.  
  632.  4. Binary image from step 3 with geologic boundaries was vectorized
  633.  by ARC/INFO GRIDLINE utility and then supplemented by hands-on
  634.  digitization.
  635.  
  636.  5. Polygon boundaries and geologic attributing of the ARC/INFO
  637.  coverage from step 4 were verified and corrected by using gray
  638.  scale image from step 2 as a background.
  639.  
  640.  6. A series of piecewise "rubbersheet" transformations was applied
  641.  to the final ARC/INFO coverage. The ARC/INFO coverages that were
  642.  used for transformation were ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M GIS cartographic
  643.  layers (RIV3M, CTRY3M). Overall RMS error of that transformation is
  644.  equal to 1,500 meters (0.6 mm on original paper map).

  655. SDTS EXPORT DATA
  656.

  659.  The Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) is a data
  660.  exchange format for transferring different databases
  661.  between disimilar computing systems, preserving meaning and
  662.  minimizing the amount of external information needed to
  663.  describe the data.   SDTS is documented in FIPS publication
  664.  173 available from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  665.  
  666.   All SDTS transfers adhere to the following naming
  667.  conventions. The files in a transfer all begin with the
  668.  same four character prefix followed by a valid module name.
  669.  In most cases the module name is a four character mnemonic
  670.  (see table on SDTS modules). For spatial objects, it is
  671.  normally one or two characters followed by a sequence
  672.  number, nnn, or nn respectively. The transfer file names
  673.  may contain both alpha and numeric characters. All
  674.  characters are in uppercase.
  675.  
  676.  There are three SDTS Export Modules in this CD-ROM
  677.  corresponding to three main Arc/Info coverages (data
  678.  layers):

  1297.             ESRI's Arcview 3.x is used to create the U.S.
  1298.             Geological Survey Arcview Project.  Note ArcView
  1299.             software is not supplied on this CD-ROM. Use of the
  1300.             ArcView project files (.APR) requires ArcView 3.0 or
  1301.             greater.
  1302.  
  1303.             There are two versions of the Arcview project found
  1304.             on this disk. Both can be found in the directory
  1305.             IRAN/VIEWS30 .  The first, IR_GEO.APR, can be viewed
  1306.             on any platform where Arcview 3.x is already
  1307.             installed.  Some modifications to your system,
  1308.             explained below, are suggested.  The second,
  1309.             IR_GEOPC.APR, can be viewed on Windows 95/98/NT
  1310.             platforms without any modification.  For a detailed
  1311.             explanation of system modifications please see the
  1312.             INSTALL.HTM file.
  1313.  
  1314.             If the operating system is Windows 95/98/NT, access
  1315.             the project IR_GEOPC.APR in the directory
  1316.             IRAN/VIEWS30.
  1317.  
  1318.             If another operating system is used, an
  1319.             environmental variable, AVDATA_IR, must be defined
  1320.             in order to optimally access the ArcView project
  1321.             located in the directory IRAN/VIEWS30.  For a more
  1322.             comprehensive discussion see the INSTALL.TXT file in
  1323.             the appropriate platform subdirectory of
  1324.             IRAN/VIEWS30.
  1325.  
  1326.             On a Macintosh platform modify the "startup" file in
  1327.             the Preferences folder of the System folder to
  1328.             include:System.SetEnvVar ("AVDATA_IR", "OF97470G")
  1329.             An example "startup" file, startup, can be found in
  1330.             the directory IRAN/VIEWS30/MAC.  The text file,
  1331.             startup, can be dragged into the Preferences folder
  1332.             within the System folder.
  1333.  
  1334.             Unix users will need to define AVDATA_IR in the
  1335.             ".cshrc file." With a UNIX machine it is assumed
  1336.             that the CD-ROM drive is refered to as /cdrom.
  1337.             Modify the ".cshrc" file with a statement like:

  1339.             setenv AVDATA_IR   /cdrom/OF97470G
  1340.  
  1341.             Subsequently, a logout and login or "source" the
  1342.             .cshrc file will set the variable AVDATA_IR.

  1344.             Windows 95/98 users can define AVDATA_IR in the
  1345.             autoexec.bat file as follows:

  1367.             This Arcview project was developed in Arcview 3.0
  1368.             but can be used with versions 3.1 and 3.2.

  1370.             When opened in Arcview 3.1 there may be a message
  1371.             asking whether to upgrade to 3.1 tools.  It is
  1372.             suggested that the user respond no.  There will
  1373.             still be tools and buttons not intended in the
  1374.             original project, but they have no impact on the
  1375.             functionality of the project.
